Conscious Contact Newsletter - February 2024 (Edition No. 3)
Greetings One and All
Seems like two minutes ago we said “Happy New Year” from the stage in Portland, and I know I’ve since sent a newsletter… but… fuck me… time feels like it’s speeding up… and all the “somedays” have arrived. “Someday Baby” is here…
I just crawled out of the emotional submarine of intensive writing and recording at The Panther with the Dimpker Brothers (now and forever tagged, a la my son Judah… as the Dimps... My kids call me Daryl and now it’s “Where’s Daryl and the Dimps?” Let’s all try to let this obvious band name stay buried). I’ve mentioned before, the Dimps and myself have been working on a band, “Grand Junction“ (working title). We had the esteemed Swedish drummer producer Karl Hovis Hovmark (@hovis) on drums… and it’s been cool working with Dex (Drizos) at the knobs and buttons.
Now the task at hand is getting my shit together for my upcoming California shows with Kareeta. I'm excited and nervous... I met Kareeta at a show in San Diego (they’d driven down from LA), I had just added some vocals to their Greg Loiacano (Mother Hips) produced new record, “Freeway Junkie Queen”... From there, the idea of doing shows together started to come around… Kareeta is an excellent rock band in a world sorely short on new rock bands... What they see in me is a mystery... But I’m stoked for this run... I’ve fronted a few other bands as a guest, Panic, Drive By Truckers, Norway Rats, Culture (yep, that Culture... long story) Zero, off the top of my head... I’m not sure I’ve ever worked with a band that has done so much homework on my back catalog... So these shows have the potential to be magical... or burn a fiery painful death into hell… either way a mandatory attendance! Next week: Costa Mesa, Santa Monica, San Diego and Las Vegas... bring ear plugs (apparently they didn’t get the warning and are letting me play guitar... with real amps and shit! Dude!) a couple weeks later we’ll be in the greater Bay Area...

Then... finally... I get back to NOLA (it’s been since pre death plague…) and another solo run thru the south pushing my “Baby You’re the Man Who Would be King'' platter… This tour wraps on Easter Sunday in ATL. Given my recent deep dive into my Catholic roots... Expect a lot of chocolate zombie bunnies on a cross songs (lord knows I have plenty, just ask Kareeta!).

What else? Have I mentioned Drizos has a brilliant new record out on Cavity Search Records? And… WSP dropped a beautiful song (Walking Each Other Home) I penned with JB in a secret cabin on a ten day ayahuasca and Tide pods bender... with a shaman friend of mine from Manaus, doing the “shooky shooky“ dance with an unhappy goat... and the lost D’Angelo/Ram Dass dub mixes... I suppose you’d have to have been there... Just ask Kareeta! Also... massive shout out to my friend Eric Amble for babysitting me on the northeast Ice Capades run… That cat… is a fucking monster guitar and all the rest of the skills, guy... it was so lovely…
Also I wanted to mention I’m playing the “Macs” Landslide on repeat in memory of our friend Kasha... life’s beautiful and short… and the weird tendency of Portland flora to start blooming mid Feb… makes it feel like summer is faintly on the horizon... unless my eyes are fuzzy and that’s just a meth lab fire… regardless it’s a stunning day outside… perhaps I’ll throw on my fly new gold maga kicks and dimp around the hood…. (sadly this is an unpopular move with my kids).
